The terms do seem to be widely interchangeable - the 1917 French Army problems are widely referred to as a mutiny as is the 1918 British Etaples problem. The same with the Epsom Surrey Canadian disturbances which resulted in the death of a british policemanIan Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10253106381895084914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4970554022397463322.post-61102050408344812482017-11-22T20:56:40.595-05:002017-11-22T20:56:40.595-05:00It's always fascinating to see the ways in whi...It's always fascinating to see the ways in which specific words are used to shape opinion and perception -- thanks very much for these insights, Julian. Has your work on the history of "mutiny" vs. "riot" been published online or elsewhere? I'd be very interested in learning more. There is more on the history of the distinction between 'riot' and 'mutiny' in "Words and the First World War"; the question of whether Allied soldiers 'mutinied' (and which ones only 'rioted') still causes uncomfortable discussion.Julian Walkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09399588406571374938noreply@blogger.com
